Bridges

Thames River, New London, CT

The day was rather cloudy, and didn't afford the best possible reflections of these two bridges.  The large bridge on the left is the Gold Star Memorial Bridge, which carries I-95 and US 1 across the Thames River in New London.  The lift bridge on the right is a part of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor Line which provides Amtrak Train service between Boston and Washington, DC.  For other great reflections, much nicer than these, visit Weekend Reflections.  Have a nice weekend. 

Urban Murals

New London, CT

Lately there seems to be a number of new murals that have appeared on the sides of buildings in downtown New London.  I guess it's far better than having these spaces filled up with graffiti.  

Information

It's a good thing I didn't need any information on the day I walked around downtown New London looking for good subjects to shoot.  The small sign in the painted window says "Closed for the Winter".  I guess nobody in the winter needs any information about what to do or see in New London. 

Eugene O'Neill

New London, CT

Some people claim that Eugene O'Neill was America's greatest playwright.  As a youth he spent his summers in New London, CT, where he no doubt developed is love of the sea which inspired many of his plays.  The statue here depicts him writing along the banks of the Thames River.

World War II National Submarine Memorial

Groton, CT

This is the conning tower of the USS-Flasher (SS-249) now serving as the centerpiece  of the World War II National Submarine Memorial located in Groton, CT.  Engraved in granite around the memorial are pictures and the names of the 52 submarines lost during the war. The names of the submariners lost are engraved on a Wall of Honor.  It's a very simple and humbling memorial, located somewhat fittingly, only a mile or so from the place were most of our country's submarines were built.

Ferry Terminal and Ferry

New London, CT

Located about 2 miles off the coast of Connecticut is Fishers Island.  It's a small island, only about 9 miles long, and although very close to Connecticut, it is really a part of New York.  It's serviced by this ferry, seen leaving New London.  I've taken the Cross Sound Ferry from New London to Orient Point, Long Island, but I've never been to Fishers Island.

I finally had some spare time and some good weather to get out and do a little photography.  I'm sure I've posted some photos of this part of New London before.  This is one of many piers reaching out into the mouth of the Thames River, just before it empties into Long Island Sound.  The sound would be off to the right of the picture.  There is a nice walkway along the piers and a nice place to sit and watch the boat traffic in and out of the harbor.  Although today's weather was pretty mild, with some sunshine, this place will be much nicer to visit in another two months or so.

I was getting tired of looking at all my pictures from the blizzard last weekend, so I decided to re-visit some photos taken this past summer.  It won't be too long until the colors turn green and there won't be so much white around.

Allow me one last picture of last weekend's blizzard, this time rendered in black and white. One week later there are still big piles of snow, but a lot has melted.  I'm ready for spring!

As is often the case with major storms, the day after the storm is gorgeous.  It was a bit chilly, but the sun was bright, and the sky blue.  Later in the week, the temperatures rose well above freezing and all this snow began to melt.  It doesn't look nearly as pretty now.

By mid afternoon on Saturday the snow had stopped and the sun even made an appearance.  After I had done some shoveling it was time to get out and do some walking.  I didn't get too far, and decided it wasn't too safe to be walking in the streets, even  though there was very little traffic.  These are the main roads right outside our condo community here.

The snow didn't quite cover our little road signs here in Chapman Farms.  I doubt anyone could actually go 15 mpg on this particular street.

Regular readers of this blog will recognize this gazebo.  It has served as a subject of at least a few previous posts.  I do recall one post which featured it covered with snow, but not quite as bit as seen here.

The snow weighed heavy on the trees with many branches drooping if not actually breaking off.   These pictures were taken early Saturday morning, and although the snow had stopped falling, the winds were still strong enough to be blowing the snow around.

It's been quite a while since I've seen this much snow.  My fellow bloggers here in Connecticut have posted their photos, so I feel obligated to post some of mine.  The snow started on Friday morning, and did not stop until mid-morning on Saturday.   By all accounts, south east Connecticut caught the brunt of this storm.  I would guess we had over 20" of snow here in Niantic, perhaps more, with lots of drifting.  Our power went out at about 10:00PM Friday night, so even though I was able to get out and do some photography, I couldn't process the pictures with my computer until the power returned early Sunday morning.  Some of my neighbors were evacuated to shelters.  It wasn't too bad inside, but by the time our power returned our inside temperature was down to 48 deg F.  I noticed quite a few trees down in our neighborhood.

I haven't been very good about posting to my blog lately.  One reason is that I like to post pictures that have been taken fairly recently.  I haven't gotten out much lately to do any serious photography due to other commitments, and some pretty lousy weather.  I also have gotten pretty picky about what photos I do post here.  Of the photos that I have taken in the last month or so, there are very few that I feel are worthy of posting, but I could be my own worst critic in those regards.  In any event, I hope to get back to a regular schedule of posting here, and getting out to take worthy pictures.  We're expecting up to 20" of snow starting today, so if nothing else, I'll have some pictures of snow soon.  I can't wait for spring......

Across the Pond

There are so many small bodies of water in this part of Connecticut, I'm not sure if this is a pond, a cove, a river or some other body of water.  It could be part of the Mystic River, which is not really a river at all but an estuary.  In any event, on this particular day I felt the colors of early winter were nicely reflected in the still waters, hence I'll be linking this to Weekend Reflections where you can see many more interesting reflections.  Enjoy your weekend.
